Worgroup Networking

Hi,

I have a few 2000 Professionals, 2000 Servers and XP Professionals on my
network. I can't seem to browse "My Network Places" any more. I can see the
shares using "net view" but whenever I open "Computers Near Me", I get
"<workgroup> is not accessible. The list of servers for this workgroup is
not currently available."

All systems are in the same workgroup and all accounts and passwords are the
same.

What am I missing?

Thanks

This may be a browse master issue. What happens if you turn all the
computers on, log them all in, then walk away for at least fifteen minutes?
Does browsing work then?

Richard,

Thanks for the advise. Just want to let you know that I followed your
suggestions and it all worked again. Weird.

Thanks,
Escape

That means you have a browse master election situation. This is normal on a
computer network where there is no domain controller. In a domain-based
network the PDC (WinNT) or PDC emulator (Win2K Active Directory-based)
provides the browse list to all computers on the network. In a pure
peer-to-peer network such as yours there is no automatic browse master, so
as computers are started up and shut down you have continual browse master
elections to determine which PC will hold the master browse list.

You can read more about it here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;188001

The simple solution, if the lack of browsing is causing no problems, is
simply to ignore the problem. If, for some reason, you must have browsing
capabilities you should consider either leaving one computer on constantly
or choosing one computer to turn on first, and make that computer the browse
master and disable the browse master service on all other computers on the
network.

This article explains a little more, and gives you information on how you
can single out one computer to become a browse master:
