Does anyone know why Wordpad tries to connect to the Internet any time you
open its Help file?

Because part of the help is on-line.

My guess is that the help file (or - more likely- the help viewer) is trying
to download dynamic content for additional help topics, or updated
information.

I assume (but have not tested) that if in XP help you turn off the
option to also search the Microsoft Knowledge Base (Menu: Options,
Search Options link), this will stop WordPad's help doing this. Try it.
