This is bizarre! I have a Windows 2000 SP4 fully updated system (Celeron 700
system in an AD LAN) where only one of the users (who is in Local Admin
group) on the system consistently gets an unlogged (nothing in the event
viewer) reboot within 5 seconds of opening Word 2000 or WordPad. Other
Office apps are fine for this user. Have deleted this user's local profile 3
times, reinstalled Office, run virus scan, Norton WinDoctor, etc.

Anyone seen this before?

No, it seems odd. When you say you deleted the *local* profile, are
you using roaming profiles? If so, the next step would be to try
deleting the server version of the profile.

It may be nothing to do with the profiles, however. As a guess, it may
be that the HDD has got some bad spots. I'd run a checkdisk on it, but
this is really clutching at straws.

Cliff

Thanks Cliff,

Checking the HD is one thing I did not do. It's certainly worth a try. We do
not use roaming profiles, so what I deleted was the user's local profile,
from the System Properties control panel. I would have thought that all the
user's particular settings would be then extinguished and returned to
defaults upon next login when a new local profile is built, but no. The
reboot behavior remains. It's SO weird!

I really suspect that it is not the profile, but another idea is to
get the user to create a profile on another machine, and copy that to
the offending machine.

Incidentally, does the user get the problem on another machine? I'd be
*very* surprised if the user does!

Another thing to check, would be the Local Policies. I'm not
particularly familiar with them but there are policies in there which
relate to Network Security, and off the top of head, I think that
there is one that logs you off if you go outside your logon hours.

But that last suggestion probably doesn't apply because it only
happens with Word 2000 and Wordpad. If you just leave the account and
don't do anything it doesn't log the user off!

Cheers,

Cliff

The user does not experience the problem on any other machine. I like that
copy profile from another system idea. Would I copy the entire user folder
under C:\Documents and Settings? We have a few local policies set but none
regarding logon hours.

So you've given me 2 things to try when I get back to work. Thanks very much
Cliff. I've posted this to another NG (win2000.applications) but haven't had
any replies yet.

I would look for and delete any .tmp files, too (hidden ones as well).
I've seen Word choke on old tmp files and crash the system.
