Word won't save new docs after security update

I downloaded the latest 6 security updates yesterday.
I created a new document in word and tried to save it. All I got was the
hourglass.
I had to do a ctrl/alt/delete to end Word and tried again - same result.
I did a system restore to the day before the update. After that, everything
was fine.
I downloaded the updates once again and the same thing happened.
I'm now back on system restore once again.
I'm using Office 97 and Windows XP home.
Is there a fix for this problem?
