XP display themes deleted after update

I have ms plus installed but was just using the default XP for my display.
Last week after an MS Update my display went into a "modified theme" and the
plus themes as well as the XP theme were no longer available in "Display
Properties". A system restore corrected this.
The same thing happened after yesterdays update only this time I cannot use
the system restore, all attempts have failed.
Any suggestions.

An additional note, the Update may be coincidental. I also ran RegCure. I
just ran a recovery in RegCure which did not resolve the problem in of
itself however I did then tried to do a system restore again and although it
was incomplete it did seem to get further along and the display seems to be
back. The options in "Display Properties" are back. The only thing that
appears to be missing are some short cuts that had been pinned to the Task
Bar. (but it's no longer white and is back to XP blue)
I am some what of a computer novice so I apologize for any terminology
blunders.
