Recently my display theme revrted itself to "Windows Classic" (grey task bar
etc) instead of "Windows XP" and there is no option to change it back. How
can i sort this?
I am using a Windows XP and the theme should be available somewhere. My
system is running fine except for this apparently deleted theme. Please Help.

Try start>settings>control panel>appearence and themes>taskbar and
start menu>start menu and tick start menu if classic menu is checked.

In Ricky B <Ricky (e-mail address removed)> had this to say:

If the other advice doesn't do the trick for you:

Start
Run
Type "services.msc" without the quotes
Hit enter
Find the Themes service and right click on it
Tell click start
If that brings up the option to select the theme then make sure it's set to
automatic
If it doesn't post back and we'll think of something more to try...

Thanks to both people for replying but I'm afraid neither worked. The first
idea did nothing, and the second the "start" you suggested i select under
"themes" was inactive, as it was already running.

Read the instructions at the top.

One of these ought to do it.

187. Restore Themes Functionality

187. Right hand side
Restore Luna Theme

214. Right hand side
Windows XP Style Changes to Windows Classic

271. Stuck in Classic View? Undo Now
-----

If XP Pro you can use Group Policy...
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | OK |

Navigate to >>>

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\
Force Classic Start Menu
Set to: Not Configured

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Desktop Themes\
Load a specific visual style file or force Windows Classic
Set to: Not Configured

Sorry to be a pain Wes but that link made absaloutely no sense to me. I'm
not exactly a computer "whizz". I can use a PC aptly enough but when it
comes to understanding text files like that its beyond me I'm afraid! Either
that or it just looks far too confusing fro me at first!
You other idea about start>run>type: gpedit.msc didn't work as it could not
find it!
Thanks for all your help, its much appreciated.

Ricky,

If the Themes service is set to Automatic and running.

First try this.

Right click the Desktop | Click Properties | Themes tab |
Click the V next to the Theme box | Select the Windows XP Theme |
Click Apply | Click OK

If Windows Classic is the only theme listed proceed below.

I do not know which of these may fix your problem.

Visit here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Click on...
187. Restore Themes Functionality
The file is restorethemes.reg
When the File Download window pops up, Click the Save button.
When the Save As window pops up, click the Desktop for the Location.
After this all the remaining files will download to your Desktop.

214. Right hand side
Click on...
Windows XP Style Changes to Windows Classic
The file is visualstylefix.reg
When the File Download window pops up, Click the Save button.

Click on...
271. Stuck in Classic View? Undo Now
The file is classicdisable.reg
When the File Download window pops up, Click the Save button.

When you have downloaded all the files, double click each one and answer yes
to the import prompt. Then see if you have Windows XP theme listed under
Themes in Display Properties.

If your C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes does not contain a Luna folder,
Luna.theme and Windows Classic.theme then you might need this one.

187. Right hand side
Click on...
Restore Luna Theme
The file is Resources.zip

Don't worry about this one for now. Save this in case the others do not fix
your problem.
