Word Template that stays with the Save As document????

I have created a word template (say the name is "TEMP.dot") and saved it as
suggest read only with a password to modify since I do not want the template
accidentally modified. However, even after creating a new document using
TEMP.dot in read only mode and then doing a save as (say the name is
"JOHN.doc"), every time I open JOHN.doc I still get a box that pops up asking
if I want to open TEMP.dot as a read only. I can cancel the box and still
open JOHN.doc and modify it, and save it.

Does anyone know why I am still getting the popup asking about the original
template?

I am working in Word 2003.

Thank you!

It sounds like you are creating documents from the template by using
File>Open rather than by using File>New and then selecting the template as
the basis for the document that you want to create.

Doug, Thank you for your response! I am actually using File>New and
selecting the template.

I just noticed this morning that even when I have the open window up and
select one of the files I have created with the template, word will pop up
the read only window. This is just while I have the file selected but not
actually opened yet, just previewing it?!? Then it asks me again once I
actually clicked on the open button.

Also, I had the template open editing it and opened one of the files I
created with the template and it did come up with the read only pop-up. Kind
of sounds like the files have linked together somehow, but I am not sure why
or how.

Thank you again!

I don't bother protecting templates.

I understand, however we have too many people here that will not use File>New
and just open the template, then save the template after they have done there
thing to it. That is why I protect them.

You don't have any suggestions where to look or why they would be tied to
each other after saving at as another file?

Thank you!!!!

If users are going to use templates in this manner it is inevitable that
there will be conflicts especially if the conflicts result in orphaned
temporary files. Only one user can *open* a template at a time. It might be
better if you used the user log-in to copy templates to the users' personal
space and then it will soon become obvious who is screwing things up and
thus you can organize some training to get them to use the templates
properly.

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunatly I do not have prevy to the login
scripts, those are for corprate eyes only. :-( Anyway, I always like to
idiot proof things if I can. I am in the process of making some short
training documents to try and teach people the proper way to strat a "new"
document using a template. I am going to unprotect the templates and make
backup copies.

Thank you both again!
