How do you start Word 2003 without showing the splash screen - Wordat work
goes straight into my normal page but Word at home shows this splash screen
and takes ages to get to the normal page.
Help please, I assume it's something simple that I've missed :-)

You may be able to suppress the splash screen by adding the /q switch to the
command line used to start Word. According to "How to use startup command
line switches to start Word 2003, Word 2002, and Word 2000"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=210565), this switch works only in Word
2000 SR-1, but it would be worth a try, especially given that
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291139 describes the same switch in Word
2002 and 2007 (nothing about 2003).

Note, however, that this doesn't save any time at all; if anything, it may
make the wait appear even longer since there's nothing to look at.

Chances are your computer at work doesn't suppress the splash screen - it's
just faster than your home computer so you don't actually see it.

I'd love to see a computer that loaded Word so fast you couldn't see the
splash screen. Mine takes 20-30 seconds to load (the first time in a Windows
session) on a relatively fast system.

Wow, that's a long time! I only experienced that type of wait recently on my
laptop that is six years old and that was just recently when Office 2007 was
installed. (It was also around the same time I decided I needed a new one.)

On the computers where I train if you blink you miss the splash screen. I
forget the specs, all can remember right now is the 24" flat screen
monitors which I'd love to have. :-)

It could be the start up difference is the training computers use the
default installation, default Normal.dot, and there aren't any add-ins
loading.

I have a zillion fonts and several add-ins. The worst problem, though, is
that ZoneAlarm Pro delays loading of *anything* when I first boot up. This
is not evident because there's no hourglass, but ZAP is still loading stuff
or checking for updates or some such nonsense. Ever since I downloaded
updates the other day, it's much worse: now svchost.exe takes 99% of the CPU
for an extended period. So I've started booting up *before* I go down to
breakfast instead of when I come upstairs and start work.

My machine is pretty old (purchased almost six years ago), but it has a
1.7GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, and an 80 GB HD with 51.6 GB free. After
initial startup, Excel starts in 3 seconds, but I still see the splash
screen. After initial startup, Word takes 11 seconds to fully load, and I
definitely see the splash screen, but most of that time is the Word UI with
add-in menus and toolbars loading.
