Word spellcheck not checking some text

I am working on a document in Microsoft Word 2003 and have opted for the
spellchecker to check spelling as I type. This function is working in some
parts of the document but ignoring large sections of text with obvious errors
such as words run together and random strings of letters. I have tried
switching off the spellchecker and then back on again; I've reset the
'recheck document' button in the options; I've also individually selected the
words and hit the spellcheck button. I've double checked all the spelling
and grammar options and am now very frustrated - can anyone help?
Thanks

Hi, Ros. Press Ctrl+A to select all of the text in the document. Click on
Tools | Language | Set Language | <choose your language> | uncheck the "Do
not check spelling or grammar" and "Detect language automatically" boxes |
Default | OK. Press F7 to rerun spellcheck.
