word save as a template

I have Word 2007 and I have it set up to automatically save as a .doc instead
of the .docx. The problem is that it always saves it as a template. I have
a feeling I will need to change something in the registry, but I don't know
what.

Are you saying it saves in .dot, .dotx, or .dotm format? Those are the
template formats.
