word 2007 always saves as a template

I have Word 2007 set up to save as a .doc instead of the .docx. My problem
is that it saves documents as templates. I can't get it to save a regular
..doc. I have a feeling I will have to change something in the registry, but
I don't know what.

The .docx format doesn't mean a template; it is the new default file format
for Word 2007. If you prefer to save in the Word 97-2003 .doc format, you
can choose it for any given document when you save, or you can choose it as
the default in Office Button | Word Options | Save.

I guess I didn't clarify that enough. I do have my settings in the "Word
Options" set to save as a 97-2003 document. But, they still save as a
template. It's the weirdest thing. When I do a save, it says that the file
type will be a .doc, but they still turn out to be templates.

What Suzanne has been trying to get at, is how does it identify that it is a
'template'. Does it for example, change the extension from doc to dot, dotx
or dotm?

It doesn't change the extension, but is calls it a template and it has that
yellow bar across the top of the icon, which signifies that it is a template.
Is there anyway I could send you a screen shot of the properties?
