word always saves as a template

I have Word 2007 and I have it set up to automatically save as a .doc instead
of the .docx. The problem is that it always saves it as a template. I have
a feeling I will need to change something in the registry, but I don't know
what.

In Word Options, make sure that you have chosen the correct file format (in
the Save category).

If you think that something is wrong with the file associations, you could
try re-registering Word; see

As Stefan suggested, first make sure you have selected the correct file
format in Word Options. If this has been verified then update your virus
scanner and perform a full scan. What you are describing, when using Save As
it defaults to template file type, is a symptom of several viruses.
