Word Pad insists on opening picture file

I have recently downloaded Vista SP1 for the third time. The first two times
it crashed my PC. This time the first problem so far is that when I attach a
picture file to an outgoing e-mail and click on that file before sending,
word pad pops up to open it showing a mess of numbers and letters. Before SP1
when I clicked on an outgoing picture file the picture automatically
appeared. I have no difficulty opening incoming picture files it occurs
automatically when clicked on. Has anyone else had this problem? I woulkd
apreciate any advice. Thank you

You mean, while you are still composing the email, you click on a picture
you have attached? I don't think that is a supported scenario. Not sure
why you would do that.

No I finish the e-mail and as a check before sending it I click n the file to
confirm in my own mind that I am sending the intended picture.

I've never come across that problem before, but try this:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.
