Word not printing page numbers

I have page numbers set for a document. However, when I preview the document
or print it, the page numbers are not shown or printed. What preference item
is control this and how can I get the pages to print with the page numbers?

you "set" your page numbers, what version of Word you're using, etc.

Using word 2007
select insert tab
select page numbers
place at bottom center
they appear in footer area on all pages

when I go to print preview - they do not appear -- nor do they print.
