Word not opening in XP Home

Word stops after putting the outline of a new doc and then puts up a
error message (with this signature-
AppName: winword.exe
AppVer: 9.0.0.3822 ModName: winword.ex
ModVer: 9.0.0.3822 Offset: 00395c27) and this C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER50.tmp.dir00\appcompat.tx

It works fine when I create another user, but it's kind of a pain to go back and forth. This happened with my daughter's desktop (also XP home) and I ended up reinstalling Office. I'd like to avoid that

In the meantime I'm going to delete that file above and see what happens.
