Word freezes when closing document based on template

I am working on a template which, when loaded, opens a new blan
document and displays a VBA form with multiple data entry fields.
After the user enters data in these fields and clicks "OK", the for
unloads and the form data is outputted in a specific format to th
blank document.

I can successfully save the document using "File-->Save As", but when
attempt to close the document (immediately after saving, so ther
should be no changes to save), I am always prompted with "Do you wan
to save the changes you made to [filename].doc?" When I choose yes
Word freezes, and I have to use Task Manager to kill it. I am usin
Word 2000 on Windows NT; this problem seems to occur on most (but no
all) workstations with this configuration, and it does not seem to b
an issue in Word 2002 on Windows XP.

Any ideas? I recently created a template very similar to this one, an
this problem did not arise with that template. I'd appreciate an
input you might have...thanks in advance!

Hi Srm,

I'd say this sounds like some document corruption in the template. You
might try this:
- Rename Normal.dot to NormalOLD.dot, start Word
- Open the problem template, go into the VB editor and use File/Export to
save all the code modules, one-by-one, to text files
- Copy any text into a new document, but without section breaks and
without the last paragraph mark
- Save the new document as a template; close the old template
- In the VB editor, File/Import to bring in the code modules
- Use Tools/Templates and Addins/Organizer to copy across any toolbars,
styles and AutoText from the original template

Now test and see if these documents are more stable.

Hi Cindy,

Thanks so much for your reply. I followed the procedure you suggested,
and it appears to have resolved the problem on my computer. However,
it is still an issue on other machines I have tested (using clean
copies of the template and Normal.dot).

All machines use Word 2000 on Windows NT...the only relevant difference
that I can think of is that there are slight variations in file
permissions from user to user. Could this be the culprit? If so,
which files/folders should I examine? Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
srm

I'm sorry, at this point I'm stumped. I suggest asking in the
word.setup.networking newsgroup if anyone there knows of any
permissions/networking issues that could be causing this.

The only other things that occur to me would be basic trouble-shooting
steps such as cleaning out TEMP files, starting Word with the /a switch,
booting Windows in SAFE mode...

I am using Microsoft Office XP and am having a similar problem.

I am doing research on the internet and the research site that I use offers links to RTF filable forms when appropriate. When you want a form, you click on a link for forms. This pops up a new window with a list of forms in blue font. When you click on one of the forms, it opens and you can edit and save the document with no problem. I then save the form and close the window and keep going with my reseach.

The problem comes in when you try to open another form. If you click on the link, a new window pops up, but freezes. The only way to close the window is by Ctl-Alt-Del. Then when you open word, the message appears that there are files that have been recovered. It's the list of forms that I had previously opened. If you open this document, the list appears with the forms highlighted and underlined, but if you click on one nothing happens. They are not linked to anything

Then when you try to close Word, it indicates that the Normal template has changed would you like to save changes? If you say yes, it indicates that the file is read-only

I have tried reinstalling MS Office and also have run full system scans with the most up to date Norton Antivirus. In addition, I have downloaded and installed the most up to date service packs for Windows

Any thoughts?
