Word Foot notes

Guest

When I use a foot note, the reference that appears above the word that I am
foot noting isn't a number. It looks like a horizontal line (-). I know that
I can change the formatting but that doesnt seem to make a difference. The
strange thing is that the footnote at the bottom of the page does show a
number and not the weird line.

Could someone please help me?

It sounds as if the numbers may be just truncated. Are you using Exact line
spacing? What is the setting of the Compatibility Option "Don't add extra
space for raised/lowered characters"?
