Page numbers and foot notes

I'm using Word 2003 on a PC. I added page numbers to a document that also
contained footnotes. The page numbers appeared on the screen where I asked
them to, but on the pages with footnotes, the page number also appeared twice
at the front of the footnote separator line. So, on page 38, the number
appears at the top center, where it's supposed to be, but then at the bottom
of the page (but not in the footer), where there's a line before the
footnotes, 3838 appears. I tried getting rid of it by removing the page
numbers, but the extraneous numbers didn't go away. Since the footnote
line is not in the footer, I can't figure out how to get to those numbers to
erase them.
any suggestions as to what happened, and how to fix it?

1. Switch to Normal view.

2. View | Footnotes.

3. In the footnote pane, on the toolbar, click the arrow of the dropdown box
and choose Footnote Separator.

4. Edit the footnote separator to remove the PAGE fields.
