footnotes

I have foot notes with schedules (starting with the letter A) and appendices
(starting with the number 1) which I would like to auto number. This would
help so that I do not have to deal with inserts manually. For example, if on
page 42 I need to add Schedule K, then the balance of the noted schedules in
the foot notes will re-number themselves manually. Otherwise I will have to
edit the footnotes manually.

Use a cross-reference (REF) field to the paragraph number of the given
schedule or appendix (Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to Heading or
Numbered item).

Thanks as that was a feature that I wasn't aware of and I will remember it
for next time. Going forward, in this case the schedules and appendices will
be in another folder (paper) and I want to avoid adding a blank page at the
end of the document listing all of the required attachments as this will also
double my work. So what I would prefer is a code in the footnotes to
increment the number or letter by one. So for example, in the inserted
footnote for new Schedule "K" I would like to type "See Schedule "[code for
preceding letter or number - in this case last schedule would have been
schedule L - plus increment]"." and then the footnotes that follow the insert
and which refer to schedules would renumber the applicable schedules. Any
suggestions? P.S., please disregard the additional postings of the original
posting as there was some system glitch last evening.

You could use SEQ fields.

OK but not sure how to do this. Tried to add a SEQ field as a test and all it
said was "Error! Main Document Only." Do you have some instructions?

After some playing around I can see that the message means that the SEQ code
function does not work for footnotes. Any other suggestions?

That error message means that you can't use SEQ fields in footnotes, so I
guess I'm out of ideas.
