Word changes normal.dot settings when sharing a file

When opening a file that was created by someone else, Word picks up the
normal.dot settings from that file and changes my normal.dot file. We share
a lot of files in the company and sometimes there are several authors. I
understand why it should not pick up my normal.dot settings, but why does my
normal.dot file pick up the settings from the shared file? Is there a way to
prevent it?

The only way the document can do this on its own is with macros. When you
open it on your computer it will attach to your normal.dot, but it won't
save anything there unless you tell it to, absent a macro.

Tools > Options > Save
Prompt to save changes to normal.dot.

Check it.
