Word attachements are opening as WordPad on new system

I just set up my new computer. Now whenever a Word attachements comes over
and I open it, the file is being opened as a WordPad file. I want it to open
as a Word file. I'm not sure what to do! Please help if you can. Thanks!

In WinXP go My Computer, Tools menu > Folder options > File Types tab >
Highlight DOC > Click Change and choose Word from the list

BTW, what does this have to do with Outlook? Just curious since this is an
Outlook newsgroup.

Have you got Word installed?

If you don't have Word installed on your new PC, the .doc file type is
associated with Wordpad.

Thank you Vince. Unfortunately, all of my DOC options in the File Types tab
are already set for Word.

I forgot to specify when I wrote the first message that this happens in
Outlook. That's why I posted my question here. When someone e-mails me a Word
file, and I open the file from within Outlook, it opens as a WordPad
document, not a Word document. If I open the document from Word, it will open
as a Word document. I'm sure it's a setting that is set wrong, I just can't
for the life of me figure out what the setting is!

Thanks,
Laura

Thank you for replying, Gordon. I do have Word installed. This problem
occures when I open a Word document that has been sent to me via e-mail (I am
using Outlook) and the file opens as a WordPad file. If I open the file from
Word, it opens as a Word file.
Thanks,
Laura

Thank you for replying Brian. Yes, I do have Word installed.

Then, perhaps, your .doc file association is not defined correctly. Open
Windows Explorer and click Tools>Folder Optons>File Types. Locate the .doc
file type. What is its association?

Hmmm, could be a MIME type issue (long shot) but let me do some research.
