Word 97 problems under XP

I've read on this forum that Office 97 runs fine under XP. However I was
working on a Word 97 document which had a lot of footnotes. Somewhere along
the way, the footnotes beyond a certain one got cross-linked and all messed
up. Opening such footnotes, or even attempting to delete them, caused Word
to crash repeatedly. The only way I could resolve the problem was by
deleting the second half of the document and re-creating it by retyping it
all over.

Of course this might have nothing to do with me running Office 97 under XP
but it never happened to me before.

Any thoughts?

Can we assume that you have updated your Word 97 to
current standards?

Best to repost this in the newsgroups specialising in Word as the
experts are there.

My hunch this has nothing to do at withing running on XP.

Yes, I have the latest updates. I think it is SR2 or something like that.
