Word 97 has error and shuts down, Nikon View too...

Have laptop running W2K, Office 97 has been on it for about a year, working OK . Now, about 20 seconds after starting Word 97, without touching any keys, a window pops up saying that there has been an error and the program will shut down. This does not happen in Excel. I un-installed, and re-installed, same thing. I also have Nikon View and when I try to open an editing program from within Nikon View, it does the same thing... These programs have also been un-installed and re-installed. Any ideas ?
 
Let 's see if this switch works with Word 97. Go to Start | Run | winword /a | OK. Does it stay up?
