Nikon Scan 3.1.2 crashes in Windows XP

This is really strange and annoying.

Just 2 days ago, my LS-2000, Nikon Scan 3.1.2, Windows XP Professional
were working fine. Then yesterday, I couldn't start Nikon Scan no
more. The windows XP error window (asking for permission to report
the crash to Microsoft) pops up as soon as I start Nikon Scan. The
program crashes before the Nikon Scan logo window shows up.

I did not install any new hardware/software or change any
configuration from 2 days ago to yesterday.

So, I un-installed Nikon Scan, re-installed it, deleted the hardware
driver for LS-2000, re-installed it, swept the registry by running an
utility supplied with Nikon Scan, and also re-installed the Adaptec
SCSI thing. It still crashes.

When I look up the error report in the XP crash windows, the
application causing the crash is "nikon scan.exe" and the module is
"mfc42.dll".

The strange thing is if I use the TWAIN interface through Photoshop
7.0, it works fine (look like the TWAIN interface does not use "nikon
scan.exe").

VueScan also has no problem accessing the scanner and scanning images.

One interesting thing is after I un-installed everything, swept the
registry and re-installed everything, and when I used the TWAIN
interface through Photoshop 7.0, I saw the last image that I scanned 2
days ago (before this crash problem) in the preview window. So
obviously, the un-installation and re-installation did not clean up
Nikon Scan's working directory. I tried to locate its working
directory, but had no success. Does anyone know where Nikon Scan
keeps its working directory (the location where the preview image and
user settings are saved)?

Any suggestion or help?

Regards,
Jonathan

Nikon Scan 3.1 actually saves its settings and preview image in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nikon

if you are using Windows XP. The un-installation does not delete this
directory. Once you delete this directory, Nikon Scan will start like
fresh.
