Greetings! New member here...

Somebody posted this in the computing.net Office Software forum, whch
doesn't get see nearly the traffic that this group does. I help out
with Excel in that forum, but don't do much with Word.

I don't know if its legit, but it made me so curious I had to post it
here. I'll post the answer back there, giving credit where credit is
due. Here goes nothing...

Hello,
- a client has a network of 6 identical IBM ThinkCentre PCs with
Windows XP Pro and MS Office 97 SBE
- On only one of the machines the following is happening:

- they want to save a word file as e.g. "test12345.doc" and try to do
so.
- when checking the folder the file has been saved as "t.doc"
- for "damnit789b.doc" you'll get "d.doc"
- for "holyc§ap.doc" you'll get "h.doc"

you get the picture. This has happened from one day to the other
without anything being installed, configured, messed with...

Any ideas most welcome, this is a bit of a nightmare..

Thanks for the response.

I assume you mean create a new XP profile, correct? What impact will
this have other than fixing the Word issue? For example, will user
settings for other applications be impacted?
