Saving As errors - First letter only is saved

Hi,

Have an issue with Word 97. Am using Office 97 SR2 on Windows XP.

When a file is saved or saved as, it will only allow the first letter of the
name as a file name.
i.e Save As test gets you t.doc
Have uninstalled and reinstalled (no luck). Downloaded the Office removal
tool and then re installed everything up to SR2. Still not fixed. Deleted
all Normal.dot files. still no joy.

I am at a loss. There is no spyware or any viruses (as far as I can tell)
Excel has no problems. nor does the networked 98 PC that saves file on the
XP system.
It used to work and has done for 6 months.

Any clues folks?????

IIRC, this problem is caused by enabling Windows 95 compatibility in Windows
XP. This is not required for Word 97. Here's part of a post from Office MVP
Beth Melton on how to correct the problem:

To rectify:

- Locate WinWord.exe
- Right-click and select Properties
- Select the Compatibility tab
- See if you have a Compatibility Mode set
- If set remove the tick in "Run this program in compatibility mode"
