Word 2007 - Bullet list with inserted picture to the left of it

H

Heather

Can anyone advise how I can get a bullet list to hang correctly which has an
inserted picture to the left of it?

In other words, I firstly created a bullet list with each bullet having
multiple lines. Each line of the individual bullets are indented and hang
correctly. I then inserted a picture to the left of the bullet list and the
bullets now no long hang correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right-click a list item and choose Adjust List Indents from the context
menu. Click "Add tab stop at" and then specify the value set for "Text
indent." When you are done, click OK.

If you are using a bulleted style, you may want to update the style to match
the selection.

Is Word 2007 still affected by the problem described in “WD2000: Hanging
Indent Lost When Text Wraps to Right Side of Square Wrapped Object” at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/209633. I know this persists at least
through Word 2003, and I have not heard that it was fixed in Word 2007.

Suzanne, you're right: Even in Word 2007, the hanging indent doesn't work
properly when there is a wrapped object to the left. Adding a tab stop,
which I suggested in my previous reply, doesn't fix the problem. :-(

Heather, sorry if I caused any (further) confusion.

I really can't understand why this hasn't been fixed (it dates back to Word
97 at least). What can be so hard about it?

Thank you both very much for your help. I thought I was going mad as I am
writing training material with screenshots included! I'm a microsoft trainer
and had not seen this before in previous versions, so very frustrated. I can
resolve the problem by converting the document back to the compatible format,
but it would be nice to keep it in 2007 format!

:)

I just tested in Word 2003 and Word 2007. In Word 2003, the hanging indent
works correctly here but in Word 2007 it doesn't.

A workaround that may help:
Create a 2-column, one row borderless table. Insert the picture in the
leftmost column and the text in the rightmost column.

Thank you Lene for the tip. Unfortunately, in my particular situation, this
wouldn't help.

It may be that the Danish version doesn't have the flaw. I also recall that
if you use the Bullets or Numbering button you get a paragraph that will
hang, but you can't create your own.

I actually work with both versions (2007 and 2003) on different machines, and
it works perfectly in 2003, which I had been used to, but not in 2007. I
have tested this to see if it had something to do wtih Word on a network or
standalone. Makes no difference, problem still there.

My Word 2003 is an English version. My Word 2007 is a Danish version but I
can switch the GUI language using a language pack. It seems as if the problem
was solved in 2003 and reintroduced in 2007.

For Word 2003, perhaps there is a difference depending on which service pack
has been installed?

I am not seeing it solved in Word 2003 (SP3). If I insert a square-wrapped
object, I cannot use *just* a hanging indent in the text to the right of it.
The hanging indents applied by the Bullets and Numbering buttons do work.
And the List Bullet style works, as does List Number. So I guess the bottom
line is that bulleted or numbered styles work, but simple hanging indents
don't.

Okay, here's a workaround: Use an outline-numbered style, with "Number
style" set to "(none)" and "Follow number with" set to "Nothing." The basic
concept is that working hanging indents can be applied only through the
Bullets and Numbering dialog.

This workaround does *not*, however, seem to work in Word 2007, nor do the
Bullets or Numbering buttons. <sigh>

I don't think I tested *just* a hanging indent in Word 2003 (SP3) the first
time. I see the same problem here: it does not work.
