Word 2003 will not start properly

Each time I try to start Word 2003, it will not let me, gives me one of the
error report messages and asks me if I want to recover data, then will only
start up in Safe Mode.

I get the following message each time: "Word failed to start correctly last
time. Starting Word in safe mode will help you correct or isolate a startup
problem in order to successfully start the program. Some functionality may be
disabled in this mode. Do you want to start Word in safe mode?"

I do so and it opens but I get the same message each time.
