Word 2003 Issues

I'm debating whether to purchase Office 2003 (for Word). Word 2003 tries to
"phone home" everytime it starts. I wouldn't know this if I did not have a
firewall that reports every application that tries to access the internet.
If I refuse it permission, it won't start at all. I have auto-updates
service completely disabled in msconfig. I have everything that looks like
it might contact the internet in Word turned off. It will run if there is no
internet connection, but if there is a connection, it won't run without
phoning home. My word processor does not need to be contacting the internet.
Any MS folks listening? Can this be turned off?

Issue 2
My friend who uses Word 2003 doesn't like it because it fills the dropdown
style list with every little text adjustment she makes to anything, and calls
it a "style" - the drop down list is pages long and pretty useless to her
because of that. What is happening here? Can it be controlled - EASILY?

Try turning off a few options, specifically:

Go to Tools, Options, General, click the service options button, and turnn
off all online and shared workspace features and the customer feedback
options.

Next, go to Tools, Autocorrect options, Autoformat as you type, under
"automatically as you type" uncheck Define styles based on your formatting.

Hope this helps.

Also, for issue (2), on the Edit tab of Tools | Options, clear the check box
for "Keep track of formatting." But do leave the customer feedback option
enabled. This will not cause Word to try to dial up; feedback is sent
transparently whenever you are online, and MS really does use this feedback
to improve the product.
