I have just noticed that my Normal.dot file now grows by 4 kb each time I
close Word, it doesn't matter if I am working on a document or not. I see
amessage on the bottom of word saying saving Normal.Dot.

Any ideas would be helpful

Try newsgroup: microsoft.public.word.newusers

You can try rename NORMAL.DOT and let Word re-create a newer one. Some
"worm" viruses have bee "known" to attach themselves to Word documents (by
way of macros.)
