Can't Highlight Text or Use Scroll Bars in Word 2003

Recently I have been having a few issues with Word 2003.

I first noticed that I cannot double click a word file to open a document.
I must open word (on quick launch bar) then go to file->open & navigate to
the document I want to open.

Then I noticed that when in word my mouse does not work at all in the
reading/editing pane or the scroll bars. I can click on menu bars or any
toolbars but I can't highlight text, place my cursor in the document, or
right click.

I also use Word as my Outlook email editor & am having all the same problems
when composing email messages.

Also, whenever I shutdown now, I get a dialog box asking me to save
Normal.dot, or once in a while I get an error message stating that Normal.dot
is being used by another instance of word.

I have looked up this problem & tried multiple things to fix this. I
deleted the Data registry key under the 11.0 folder which fixed the problem
only for the 1st instance of running word (immediately went back to the
problem when I ran outlook & started using email). I also tried deleting
every instance of Normal.dot on the machinge with the same results, worked
once then back to the problem.

I have also noticed that I have two Adobe PDF menus in word, one is blank.
And once in a while when shutting down I also get a PDFMCustom.dot has
changed very similar to the normal.dot message. Both of those dialog boxes
are coming from word.

Any other ideas?
