Word 2002-Why can't I highlight commented text, or number my comme

I updated from Word97 to Word 2002, and my comment functionality went out the
window. Text balloons don't cut it for me. In Word 97, when I added a
comment, the text I commented ON became highlighted, and the comments were
numbered.
Now all there is to show a comment, if I decide not to use the balloons, is
a tiny little set of brackets, which are very difficult to see when I'm
working on a manuscript with hundreds of editor comments on it. Is there any
way in Word 2002 to highlight or make the selected text (which I've commented
on) more easily visible, other than those gawd-awful balloons?

You can upgrade to Word 2003, which restores the highlighting (and you can
disable balloons in either version).

Pardon my cynicism, but that sounds a lot like paying to fix what I didn't
break. The fact that Word2003 put the highlighting back in proves that they
never should have taken it out!

I won't argue with that. I was merely pointing out your options.
