Displaying the Styles task pane and selecting "Styles in use" will
(theoretically) display the styles that have been used (not necessarily the
ones that are still in current use). You can also find a list of styles at
the end of the document if you open it using the "Recover Text from Any
File" setting for "Files of type," but again this may be styles that have
been used rather than just the ones in current use.

In the styles task pane every style used in my document, including the
paragraph that the cursor is positioned in, have the "select all" option
greyed out with the phrase not currently used.
If I Open file for recover text, Word very helpfully converts all the styles
to normal.
I suspect that it might be relevant -I have recently re installed Word 2002
on the 2 new machines I bought which are running Vista. The styles in use
are currently greyed out on both new machines.
If you have any further thoughts I woud be very grateful.
Sorry forgot to say. I have a large number of styles in the template I used
on some documents. Unfortunately changed my documents to update styles
automatically. So the styles in my document include many that are not used
which were pulled in from the template. This is the reason I want to know
which ones are not being used - so that I can remove them.
Select All is not available unless you have "Keep track of formatting"
enabled (Tools | Options | Edit). You didn't mention that was what you were
after.
You misunderstood what I said about Recover Text. If you scroll to the end
of the document (yes, it's all in Normal style), you'll see a list of fonts
and styles used. Given that the list in a sample document I pulled up shows
that I have used Tahoma font (possibly pasted something in Tahoma in and
converted it to TNR) and Table Normal and Balloon Text styles (nope), it's
not very dependable.
Another way to view actually used styles, albeit requiring some scrolling,
is to switch to Normal view and display the Style Area (set the style area
width to something greater than 0" on the View tab of Tools | Options).
