Word 2002 problems

Hi All: This is frustrating me no end. For some reason, none of my settings
will save in Word 2002 (XP Office). My recent document list goes away each
time Windows is started. I have deselected all Smart Tags and the next time
Windows opens......... sure enough. The check marks are all back. Save auto
recover is turned off; embed smart tags is turned off; check grammer with
spelling is turned off. Yet when Windows restarts, they are all back,
Deleting registry entries hasn't helped. TweakUI XP hasn't helped. Sticking
pins in a computer doll hasn't helped. Cursing Bill Gates hasn't
helped.............. well, actually, it made me feel better for a minute, but
it didn't help the problem. If anyone has a solution, beyond trading this in
for WordPerfect, I'd really appreciate hearing it. Thanks.

Well, I thought I might just have the answer here. I had installed Adobe
Acrobat 6.0 last week, and the PDFMaker was all over Word, Excel and
PowerPoint. I deleted all references to it and I just uninstalled Acrobat
completely. I removed every reference to Adobe throughout the system and the
registry, then reset all my preferences back in Word, opened and closed
several documents so they would show up on the recent docs and rebooted.
With Carly Simon's "Anticipation" playing in my head, I patiently waited for
a boot up and gingerly clicked the Word icon. It opened and I clicked
File......... Lo and behold (you remember them... they were a comedy group
in the 70's) the recent docs is empty; the smart tags are back and nothing is
the way I left it. So, Adobe PDFMaker's not the culprit. Any other
suggestions?

If it only occurs after rebooting then I it almost sounds like you
have something performing a system restore when you reboot or your
Registry is locked down since the settings you describe are stored in
the Registry.

It is Acrobat 7 that interferes with Word (6 works fine). See
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm

It seems likely that your Word data key in the registry is corrupt. That can
be rebuilt by deleting it (but you will then have to restore your
preferences manually) - see
http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm.

I would also attend to
