Word 2002 Optio Save Problem

I want to forever remove smart tags from my Word 2002. I did as suggested by
Carol 2/9/2006 and it seem to work except I went back into Tools-Options-Save
and I find that after I uncheck "embeded smart tags" and "linguistic data"
they are checked again once I exit and then recheck them. The new settings
are not updating as I want them to. I basically want to use Word 2002 without
any help unless I ask for it. Today I was typing a letter and a little thing
popped up guessing how to finish spelling the word I was spelling. I don't
want that. I had asked microsoft about this twice and twice they could not
come up with the correct solution. Thank you for you time!

This is AutoComplete: Insert | AutoText | AutoText: "Show AutoComplete
suggestions."

Tried that. It still will not remain unchecked when I go into Options or Auto
Correct and uncheck smart tags. What do I need to do to make my updated new
settings (unchecked boxes) saved as "Document 1" stay as unchecked. Why do
they re-check themselves after I uncheck them?? I just typed a letter and
Word was copying numbers & underlining addresses with a pink dotted line. It
also capped the word "on" when I wrote "info. on" I know to correct this I
need to uncheck certain boxes...problem is...they re-check themselves!!

Also, (per your instructions)...I want to open "Document 1" in the "Normal"
View. I tried looking for "normal.dot but that file wasn't there. I really
appreciate your help!!

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm for
instructions for finding Normal.dot. The rest of your problems may well be
caused by a poorly written add-in. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm. But
please note that the behavior you described is a result of AutoComplete (in
the AutoText dialog), not smart tags. If you don't want to see that, either
disable AutoComplete or delete the AutoText entries that are generating it.

I finally located "normal.dot" I unchecked everything I wanted to uncheck
and "saved as" normal. Came back a few days later and they were checked!!
Prior to this I tried to save the changes as "document1."...same results.
The items that get checked again reside in Options>view, general, edit. When
I had the normal.dot I noticed that it came up in View>Normal...just what I
want...problem is when I go to open word and get Document1 it opens in
View>Print Layout. I don't know if it makes any difference but this Word 2002
came with the "Works Suite" software. Thanks again!!

You should not be using "Save As" for Normal.dot. A simple Save is all
that's required. But the Options settings are not stored in Normal.dot but
in the Registry; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm for instructions on
deleting the Registry key. Note, however, that apparent failure to save
Options settings is often the result of a poorly written add-in changing the
settings at startup.
