Word 2000 Formatting Problem

Hi:
Sure hope I have the correct newsgroup!
I'm having a problem understanding the viewing of files I have created
with WORD 2000. In the first viewing, when I click on a filename
(Bouchar39.doc) the file is viewed by WORD (through association) and appears
with all the formatting characteristics I have created within it. No
problem here. But when I activate WORD and open the identical file, the
file appears different. It has the same text-content but is not formatted
as the first viewing!! All my WORD files react the same way. What gives????
The first viewing is preceded by the message "Requesting Virus Scan..."
on the status bar (probably due to the fact that I'm using Norton
SystemWorks).
It appears that the OPEN command of WORD is not functioning as it
should. What is wrong and more importantly, how do I correct this? Would
appreciate any help anyone can give. Thanks in Advance!!

Hi Graham:

Thank you so much for the answer. Success at last!!
The file type was BLANK!! Now I don't have a flat forehead!! (or two day
headache)!!
