Won't Read CD-ROM

For some reason Windows won't read my cd-rom. It will
open and close fine, but won't read a disc. I bought a
new cd-rom thinking that he old one was bad, but same
thing. When I go to the device manager there is a
yellow "!" sign next to the cd-rom and the properties
says, "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for
this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code
41)". Does anyone know what this means and how to fix
it??? Please help me.

It sounds like windows does not sense the CD drive. This could ahppen if
the drive was not connected, or if the drive had no power, or if the
connection were loose, or if the cable were defective. It could also happen
if the jumpers on the drive were set improperly. That is, if the jumper was
set to slave, but the drive was connected to the master position of the IDE
cable. Finally, it could happen if the IDE conteoller to whihc the drive is
attached were defective.

Start by determining whether the BIOS sees the drive. If it does not, then
XP has no chance, and the problem is most likely hardware in nature. Reboot
the PC and look and the black screens with white characters that flash by.
After the CPU and RAM are identified, ther should be some mention of a hard
drive and the CD drive.

If the BIOS sees the CD drive, next try booting from a floppy into win98 or
ME. If you do not have such a boot floppy, get a self-extracting image of
one from www.boodisk.com. Be sure to get one with CDROM support.

By the way, I assume that the CD drive is NOT connected to a SCSI card? If
it is the procedure for getting the BIOS and XP to see it are different than
if it is a plain IDE (or ATAPI) device. If it is SCSI, repost with
additional info.

Finally, is it USB? If so, repost with more info.

from MS web site..

41 Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41) A driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This happens when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device

If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device

If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer version of the driver might be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

Download this fix to fix missing Cd drives or drives with error 39
etc:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm. Download
the vbs
script file, double click it and click yes when prompted. You will
need to
reboot for the changes to take effect.
