Won't 'Open in New Window'

B

Brian

I'm running IE6 on a system running Windows 98se. A few
weeks ago, my browser stopped opening new windows. That is
to say, the new window opens, but hangs before the URL or
the page is loaded. I have searched and read and found
that this is not just my browser. I have applied all the
fixes that I have found to no avail.

The worst part is that there area couple of new Windows
Updates that I need. When I go to the update page and
select the suggested updates, the download progress
indicator does the same thing. It appears, but will not
download or install the new updates. I have found that if
I 'stop' and 'refresh' a new window, the window will load,
but this does not work with the download progress.

Anyone have a fix or suggestion? Anyone know where I can
get these update files directly? Any help would be
appreciated.

Hi Brian - Go to Start|Run and enter "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the
quotes). After you get a Success message, re-boot. If that doesn't work,
then check out the following article and do the additional steps outlined
there:

Hi Brian - Well, maybe we can "brute force" it.

1. Go to Start|Run and enter one line at a time (or even easier, open a DOS
box and copy the following in its entirety and then paste it into the box):

regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 comcat.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Msoeacct.dll
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\Msoe.dll"
regsvr32 msjava.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 Stdole2.tlb
regsvr32 Olepro32.dll
regsvr32 Msjet40.dll
regsvr32 pdm32.dll
regsvr32 Msjtor40.dll
regsvr32 Dao360.dll

with a Return after each .dll. You'll get a message about successful
completion of the re-registration process after each one, then enter the
next (with the DOS box they'll be continuous except for the last one).

Since you use Win98x, you'll get an error on Shell32.dll; just ignore it.
Only the ME, Win2k and XP versions of windows have shell32 as an object that
needs registering. (******Brian, for these earlier operating systems, run
"regsvr32 shdoc401.dll " instead of "regsvr32 Shell32.dll".*****)
Depending on your system, you may also get "not found" error messages on the
last two - if so, ignore them.

Re-start your computer when you've finished.

2. Some links to additional possible solutions are given here:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window
Also see: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679 for certain registry
checks that can be made.

3. You can also do the following, but BE AWARE that it will reset to the
default Homepage and Search. Go to: IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/
and click Reset Web Settings.

4. And now go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Scroll
down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol/Advanced/Edit. Under Application
used to perform action it should read: "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes. It may be "%SystemDrive%:\Program Files\Plus!\Microsoft
Internet" for NT4. )

DDE should be set to: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application should say: IExplore
DDE application not running should be blank
Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL

The above settings should also be there for URL:Gopher.

Here's a more detailed procedure for this if you have difficulty, courtesy
of Robert Aldwinckle:

"1. Find Files for E:\Program Files\iexplore.exe
(That's a partial path I'm giving it to just get there quicker.)
2. Use Alt-Enter to open the Properties for that file
3. Click on the Location: field. Select it all (Shift-F10,A)
4. Copy it to the clipboard. (Shift-F10,C)
5. Open Folder Options and navigate to
Editing action for type: URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol
6. In the box labeled Application used to perform action (Alt-L)
highlight everything _between_ the first doublequote and the
last backslash. NB: leave unhighlighted the characters I mention
and everything after the last backslash.
7. Press Ctrl-v
8. Close the dialogs.

....
If there are other protocols you need fixed do them in the same way.

Here's what my procedure is based on. It will give you a
bit more detail about step 5 which is OS dependent.
FWIW I start Folder Options using my Start menu
(Win,s,f) (I'm using Windows NT + WDU.)

OLEXP: Internet Shortcuts in Outlook Express Do Not Start Web Browser
(Q177054)"

See if that helps. If not, post back - there's one more thing we can try.

Thanks. Worked through the list of dll registrations, and
got the expected error on Shell32, but I also got errors
on Stdole2.tlb, pdm32.dll, Msjtor40.dll, and Dao360.dll.
I'm not even sure if I need them. I've tried to stay out
of my registry and dll files as much as I can, I know how
much trouble I can get into changing the wrong ones... :)

I'll work through the second part of your message to see
how far I get and report back.
Thanks, Brian

Hi Brian - Errors on those are probably OK for your Win98SE system.

Well, ran the second part of the message and did what was
suggested. Still no luck. I am seriously thinking of
upgrading to another version of Windows. I can't figure
this one out. It has been so good to me for so long, too.
I've had this one for about 5 years and have never had
this problem before. I'm getting disgusted with it.

Still, it would be a particularly nice feather in my cap
to whip this puppy back into shape and make it do what it
used to do... Still working on it. What else can I do at
this point?

Hi Brian - Well, one last thing. It won't seem to apply to your problem,
but trust me . . . . You need to take a look at:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;Q259737 You'll need to download
and run the mcrepair.exe program from that article to replace some
dll's and a type library file (Asycfilt.dll Oleaut32.dll Olepro32.dll
Stdole2.tlb) with older versions. Rename your current ones for BACKUP to
play safe. When you run the mcrepair executable and it prompts you whether
you wish to overwrite Newer files, make sure to click YES for each file ( do
not select "No" or "No to All" ). You need to replace them all and then
reboot. Try that and see if it solves your problem. If not, restore the
ones you renamed.

If that doesn't help you might also want to try the following, courtesy of
Henri Leboeuf quoting another post about an RPC error related to printing,
but which has turned out to help your situation sometimes also:

"Several people have reported this error recently. This error results from
installing the latest build of Windows Script Host 5.6 (dated
4/23/03). The latest build has a serious bug in the file dispex.dll
that breaks PrintPreview, Find, and WindowsUpdates in Internet
Explorer. If you have already installed this new build. You need to
track down and replace the system file dispex.dll with the previous
version. In Windows Me, you will need to boot from a floppy in order
to do this, because the OS protects the file."

An updated version of Windows Scripting 5.6 is now available with a
corrected dispex.dll here:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/deta...F6-249C-4A72-BFCF-FC6AF26DC390&displaylang=en
This update should also help those Win98x users having problems with
hanging/unresponsive downloads from Windows Update.

Well, I tried every thing that was suggested. Nothing
worked. I finally backed up all my recent work and
formatted the hard drive. I had a smaller hard drive that
had the originals on it, from when I up-sized my hard
drive. It's a good thing I didn't format that one... :)

In any case, I have full functionality back in IE6, got
the Windows Updates installed, and everything else. I just
wish I could have licked the problem rather than erase it.

My question at this point is: How long has this problem
been around? I haven't seen anything on it before, until
it happened to me and I started researching the subject. I
am certainly not the only one having this problem. Is it
something inherent in IE6, or is it some outside influence
affecting the program? It seemed to me to be registry/Dll
related, but nothing I did would help. (I wish to thank
all who provided suggestions, tho..)

YW Brian - Well, at least you're back in business. Case like yours which
end in a re-install are, in my experience, pretty rare. Usually one of the
fixes previously mentioned takes care of things.

Jim,

Did you ever check into updating your repair script with some extra regsvr32
options where possible?

E.g. remember this? <eg>

< http://groups.google.com/[email protected] >

BTW this thread doesn't make clear if a normal IE Repair was tried.
That should have been possible for the OS involved and would have
effected some of those extra re-registrations that I described in my post.

OK, thanks for reminding me, Robert - I had added them to my "big fix" post,
but not to the "little fix" one. Will do so there also. :)

Hi, guys. Thanks again for the help. Yes, I did try the
Repair function a number of times... I would fiddle with
one or two different fixes, then run the repair again in
the hope that something I went over would prompt a full
repair. Unfortunately, this was not the case with my
machine.
