Won't maintain default printer settings

P

Paula

I am using Windows XP SP3. I have 3 printers: HP 1320, HP 6110, HP 6500. I
want my 1320 to be my default printer but, without any changes on my part, it
will automatically go and switch it to the 6500. I have never had the 6500
as the default printer. It is not even connected as it is a printer I have
at a remote location.
Can anyone explain this and offer a solution?

It's the way HP wrote their drivers. It appears HP decided that the 1320
should be the default and so each time you reboot, that's the way it will
be.

You could contact HP, but somehow I doubt they'll change it just for you.
Sorry.

I wish it would make the 1320 the default printer. It doesn't. It makes the
6500 the default printer.

I have a similar problem with my Officejet 7310 (networked via D-Link) and my
USB-connected Photosmart 7760. I can set the 7760 as default, but it always
reverts back to the Officejet 7310. I have HP Digital Imaging Monitor running
in the background.

Not meaning to "hijack" Paula's thread, but HP Digital Imaging Monitor is a
is a pop-up menu-driven program that provides access to various functions. (I
mentioned it because of your previous post: Is there any special HP software
running in the background?).

If the Officejet 7310 All-in-one is selected, 10 buttons appear: Scan
Picture, Scan Document, Transfer images, Send a fax, Make Copies, HP Image
Znone, HP Document Viewer, Creative Ideas, HP Shopping, Software Update.

If the Photosmart 7760 is selected, 2 buttons appear: Transfer Images and HP
Image Zone.

Thre is a last resort to try. It's worked for me on HP printers when all
else did not.
Uninstall all the printers. disconnect all the printers. Reboot.
reinstall one at a time and reboot. The last printer to install is the one
you want to use as the default printer.

There is another issue that we ran across. The first printer to initalize
and tell windows that it's up and running may end up being the default
printer. We never did find a good simple way to get around this behavior.
