Won't go into standby mode!!!

Bruce

I have my monitor set to turn off after 20 minutes, and system standby at 30
minutes. The monitor turns off, but the computer never goes into standby. If
I make the settings 1 and 2 minutes respectfully, it works, but not at a
longer time lapse, [I have tried many combinations]. I am not using a screen
saver, but I have the same results if I do.
Thanks for any ideas.

Why not just forget the Monitor timeout and simply go to
standby at 30 minutes ?

You might check for a BIOS update, if you are comfortable
doing that type of operation. Sometimes firmware updates are
released to address power state problems.BIOS updates
will have a Readme.Txt or the Website will list changes &
bug fixes for each revision.

If your system is ACPI compliant, it could also be attributable
to your video driver. You should check the video card web
site and see if an updated driver is available.

Should have mentioned that I tried standby only and that didn't work.

Hi Bruce,

Do you have an indexing service running? The activity it creates could
prevent the system from going into standby mode, but would not affect the
monitor.

Rick:
Don't think so. Not even sure what an indexing service is. Dell says I'm
going to have to re-install XP with CD's they're going to send me. Said
there may have been an issue using a 3D screen saver that corrupted the
power scheme. Not looking forward to this. Got my files backed up, but I
have programs downloaded that I don't even remember where I got them from.
Thanks again.

Hi Bruce,

Open Windows Explorer, right-click the hard drive (if you have multiple
ones, do them one at a time), select properties. On the general tab, it will
tell you if the indexing service is on.

Hi, Rick,
Where do I find the hard drive? I right clicked on 'Local C Drive' and
unchecked indexing service. Was this the correct procedure?
Thanks once more.

Hi Bruce,

Yes, that's it exactly. Reboot to make sure the service is stopped.
