Won't fully maximise

When I maximise a window, like Internet Explorer, it will
not fully maximise. I can still see a bit of desktop at
the top, and the bottom goes below my taskbar. It has
just started doing this. Why?

Open it but don't hit the maximize icon, instead just use you mouse to
stretch it to fill the screen and then click on File and the Close. It
should then open to the saved size.

But why does it do this? Maximised should be full
screen, in the right place.
