Wndows XP start-up error

HI folks,

Came home tonight to find that ny screen saver had frozen.
I did a reboot and received the following message.

"Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

I wish I knew where to start! Can anyone offer any advice?
