wndows 2000 add/remove programs crashes after windows update

Does anyone know how to fix the problem
that causes the ADD/REMOVE Programs screen to come up empty
and display an error that says:

Object doesnt support this property or method.
res://sp3res.dll/default.hta
Line: 82

This occurred immediately after a Windows update session.
I would uninstall the update but the add/remove programs
app doesnt work anymore.
I tried re-registering the APPWIZ.CPL using regsvr32, per
a microsoft support article, which I recall worked once
for me in the past, but this time its slightly different
and doesnt fix it.

How about just telling me how to re-install win2K without
losing all the program installations I currently have on
that system.

Stefan -

Try the following steps:

from: http://www.jsiinc.com/subm/tip6000/rh6032.htm
1. Open a CMD.EXE prompt.

2. Type regsvr32 mshtml.dll and press Enter and OK.

3. Type regsvr32 shdocvw.dll -i and press Enter and OK.

4. Type regsvr32 shell32.dll -i and press Enter and OK.

5. Close the CMD window.

Also, you could try to reload IE on the system. I've seen good results with
each of these solutions.

Good luck!

Add\Remove Programs Tool May Not Work After
Installing Internet Explorer 5.5 or Internet Explorer 6
on Windows 2000

View products that this article applies to.
This article was previously published under Q265829

SYMPTOMS

If you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 2000, the
Add/Remove
Programs tool in Control Panel may stop responding (hang)
or become corrupted. As a result, you can no longer remove
programs or install network-published programs from
Control Panel. Also, the Configure your Server option in
Administrative Tools may stop functioning properly. In
addition, the Folder view pane in Windows Explorer may be
blank
or gray instead of having the folder tree view.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior reinstall Internet Explorer 5.5
or Internet Explorer 6.

You may also resolve this behavior by using the following
steps:

1.Start the computer in Safe mode with Networking by
pressing the F8 key during startup.
2.Log on by using the local administrator account (the
Windows Update dialog box appears that states that
Windows is now updating the following items;
Browsing Services, Internet Tools and System Services.)
3.After you log on, verify that the symptoms no longer
occur.
4.Shut down and restart the computer, and then log on
as usual.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows
2000.
