wmp11 won't stream (vista home edition)

wmp11 has been working fine since I purchased a pc with vista home edition
installed. About a week ago, it suddenly stopped streaming music or video
from the internet, including Napster. Have tried most of the suggestions in
forums (codecs, default, system restore, etc), but without success. Can
anyone help? Many thanks

I am having exactly the same problem, is it when you go onto a website that
requires windows media player does it just shows a red cross? If this is the
case its the Internet explorer codec that is messed up or it not there, this
is the problem i am having. As windows media player is part of Vista you cant
uninstall it or reinstall it. And windows updates install a latest version so
any older versions you try you cant install again not even the latest version
again. I am also using Home Premium and so far this is the only problem i am
having with it. I have tried alot of forums but still no luck. You might be
stuck with this porblem.

Hi Matty

Thanks for the information. I'm not getting a red cross, in fact I'm not
getting anything from wmp. Like you, I've tried forums and everything I can
think of, but nothing seems to resolve the problem. I've been wondering
about IE and reinstalled that this afternoon - the only difference it made
was that wmp opened when I tried to stream, but no video/audio was
forthcoming. Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

but still nothing, might try again though.

I am having a similar problem. Mine is that video and mp3 links will not
stream but instead the save to disc box comes up. Usually the things I want
to see then time out. Im finding this very very frustrating and wish I hadnt
got vista. Any ideas gratefully accepted.

At long last, I'm pretty sure I've found the solution to this problem - it's
working for me anyway. Video and music is streaming again in wmp 11 on
vista.

In the 'Start' menu, go into 'Control Panel', click on 'Default Programs',
click on the option 'Change Autoplay Settings', go to the bottom of the page
and click on 'Reset to Default'.

That's all it took. I can't believe it's so simple, yet it's taken hours of
trying different things over ten days to discover the solution. I hope it
works for you. Spread the word.

All the best,
Dave

Alas Dave no. Good try but it didnt work for me.

The save box that comes up claims that it has an incorrect file type or is
corrupted. i know that neither is true as it is an .wmv made for wmp! It is
definately not corrupted as this is a reliable site and not a P2P filesharing
thing. when i do download them they play beautifully. It is simply a glinch.

You can hit this same state in XP as well. I'm pretty certain that you
downloaded an application that reset the file associations incorrectly. I
won't name them (you're very much not the only one to hit this problem), but
I did contact them a while and Gently Advised them how to fix this, and
their next version will fix this.

I'm sorry you ran into this.
