WMP11 no longer streams .asx and .asf files

Whenever I try to stream one of these files types, for example, from
cdconnection.com or cduniverse.com, I get an error message. The process is
slightly different on each site, because one uses .asx and the other uses
..asf. Bottom line is when I request web help it suggests a corrupted file or
missing codec. If that were true however, I should not be able to save the
files and then play them from disk, which works fine, so something is
interfering. My default program for these fles types is WMP11. If I change
that to Winamp, then I can stream them without problems.

Based on another query here, I ran sfc /scannow. It did find some corrupted
files and apparently could not fix all of them. But the log file is 21MB
long so finding the problem files has been impossible so far.

Of course if I could uninstall WMP11 from Vista and then reinstall I suspect
the problem would be solved, but MS won't let me do that. So how do I
correct this error. Yes, I have a workaround, but would rarther have a fully
working copy of WMP11 even if I use Winamp. I know from experience from XP
and WMP9/10 tat first one function stops working, then another until it
becomes unuseable.

The only recent change to my pc was to try IE8 beta 2, whcih I removed
almost immediately because it rendered some of my standard sites horribly
slowly as well as horribly.

Sorry about this duplicate entry, my original post did not appear for some
time and I assumed it was lost.
