Audio Codec / Vista - WMP 11

For no apparent reason, most of my media files (WMA, WMV, etc) are playable
anymore in WMP11 running on Vista Home Premium. I get the following error
message:

Codec is missing
Windows Media Player cannot play the file (or cannot play either the audio
or video portion of the file) because the Windows Media Audio 9 Standard
(161) codec is not installed on your computer.

The missing codec might be available to download from the Internet. To
search for the Windows Media Audio 9 Standard (161) codec, see WMPlugins.com.

Needless to say, I've clicked on it, 'installed' the codec and rebooted
about 100x to no avail. This is troubling as I"ve got tons of content that I
can no longer play, and I can't uninstall/reinstall WMP11 because it's
hard-wired into Vista. HELP!
