Should Vista WMP play dvr-ms video by default?

on a new HP M8020 Vista Home Premium PC, I can record TV fine to DVR-
MS files with Vista Media Center, but cannot then play the DVR-MS file
with WMP11, it says no codec found blah blah blah

According to my googling, WMP needs an MPEG2 codec for DVR-MS, but if
I have a DVD player installed, then there should be a MPEG2 codec
available for WMP. The M8020 came with a DVD player preinstalled and
I also installed my purchased copy of WinDVD7 which worked fine on XP.

So, iianm, WMP should have a codec for DVR-MS, so it should play DVR-
MS, but it does not.
WMP plays AVI and MPG and MP3 fine, but not DVR-MS.

Premium comes with the Microsoft MPEG2 decoder, which should likely work
great.

Under WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information menu tool, what
MPEG/DVD decoders does it say that you have installed? It sounds like one
of those has overridden the Microsoft decoder here.
