WMP 9/10: no internet connection, no access to album info

I was using WMP 9, and about the time I ran a Spybot scan
and got rid of the WMP files, the Media Guide wouldn't
show up, and clicking 'Find Album Info' didn't work. I'd
get a "The page cannot be displayed".

So I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, and still the
same results. Then I downloaded the Beta of WMP 10,
hoping that would fix it. Still same results. I went back
into Spybot and 'recovered' the WMP files, but I am not
sure if the Spybot run is what caused the problem. That
didn't work either, though.

So I've gone through EVERY SINGLE setting there is in
WMP, tried all different configs, including the defaults,
and still no cigar.

I've updated WMP to the full 10, my video and audio
cards, all other Windows Updates, and DirectX 9.0c. Still
no connection to the internet. It won't find the album
info, connect to any online stores, or show me the guide.

What else can I do? :-(

Try this setting in Internet Exporer

Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Check the box that says "Always
dial my default connection"

Also make sure in Windows Media Player the "Work offline "setting on the
File menu is unchecked

Thanks, Jon. But your suggestions didn't solve my problem
either. :(
*Sigh*...I don't think I will ever find a solution to my
problem.

If you're using a firewall, then check that you haven't inadvertently
blocked WMP from accessing the internet (file is wmplayer.exe)

Have you tried doing a System Restore? Go to Start > Programs > Accessories
System Tools > System Restore.

I recommend you choose the earliest time possible before this problem
started occurring.

If that does not work, you could boot from your Windows installation CD and
re-run Windows Setup and choose to repair a corrupted installation.

Unfortunately I bought one of those computers that did
not come with a Windows CD. It just gives me the option
to create a Restore CD. :(
