Can I skip SP1 and install right away SP2 ???

Hi,

* WMP 9 plays only sound but NO VIDEO (black screen) for .wmv and any other
microsoft compatable video format. When I open WMP, movie trailers are
advertised in WMP itself (not in any browser). Also those video
files/trailers from microsoft.com do not show any video - only sound - in the
WMP. Strange thing is that I have the same problem with Quicktime when
playing .mov files, only sound - video is horizontal bright colorfull lines
that shake a bit. *.mpg files do play correctly with Quicktime, though.

* I upgraded WMP to 10 and then 11 but no solution. After that I removed
all WMP updates back to WMP 9 but still no positive result. However, the MWP
and Quicktime PLUGIN versions work very well within a web (html) page. Hence
WMP and Quicktime as a stand-alone player are a problem. I've installed Real
Player which reads and plays any video format correctly whithout any problem.


* Two weeks ago I've reinstalled the entire HD, that is, winXP from scratch
following a reformat of the HD. After winXP I installed immediately SP2 - I
skipped SP1 but that should be ok. However, the problem with WMP 9 and
Quicktime wasn't resolved - WMP and Quicktime (for .mov files) still do not
show video and only sound. I've removed and reinstalled Quicktime a few time
but still no positive result. I've also done all DirectX Diagnostic Tool
test and everything is ok. I have now update wmp9 to wmp11 but still no
video and only sound.

* The first time I had problems with WMP and Quicktime was after the first
time I skipped SP1 and went immediately to SP2 after a winXP reinstall, that
must've been beginning this year.

Could it be that the skipping of SP1 is at the basis of the WMP and
Quicktime problems?

What can be done to resolve the WMP (and Quicktime) problem without having
to reinstall WinXP?

Is it possible to run SP1 again AFTER SP2 has been installed? I am not
gonna try that until I know for sure SP1 is not going to mess up my system.

Yes it's fine to install XP then SP2, bypassing SP1. SP2 is cumulative.
Everything in SP1 is included in SP2. No you can't run SP1 after SP2.

I doubt if that is your problem with WMP or Quicktime. Sorry I don't have
a resolution for you but you might want to post to one of the media player
newsgroups.

Hi,
I also have a dual head card, monitor 1 is the LCD from the laptop and
monitor 2 is the external monitor. I made monitor 1 the default monitor and
disabled monitor 2, but still no result, WMP stays black for all video
formats. I would like to solve the problem without the help of a second
monitor.

Any idea how to tell WMP to attach the overlay to the LCD monitor, that is
monitor 1?? Unbelievable that this happens with WMP from MS on WindowsXP
from MS. All non-MS soft is working - the MS application, on the other hand,
is not working properly. ??!!

I've connected an external monitor to my laptop and indeed, the WMP player
runs on the LCD laptop monitor while the image itself and only the image is
projected onto the external monitor. Unbelievably creazy!!
I've tried to get the image back from the external monitor to into the WMP
player which is displayed on the LCD monitor, but it didn't work.
I've unchecked the box /extend my windows desktop onto this monitor/ in the
display panel but without any succes - the video image did not return into
the WMP player on the LCD monitor. The WMP (on the LCD monitor) shows a
black screen.

Do you have any other suggestions about how to get the video image back into
the WMP on the LCD monitor??

Read this! If I then drag the WMP from the LCD monitor to the external
monitor, then the video image is shown (in full screen) on the LCD monitor.
So, it looks the video image does not want to play inside the WMP. This is
even more creazy.

Try dragging the Media player window onto the external monitor. The overlay
should appear in the right place. If not close media player and reopen it.
You should now be able to drag the media player window back and the overlay
should go with it.

I have just had another idea. Somewhere in your graphics card options
(either in Control Panel or from the 'advanced' button on the monitor set up
properties), it's possible that there is a check button or option somewhere
that says something along the lines of 'always show video on secondary
monitor'. It could be buried anywhere. This is generally designed to
direct video output from DVDs to the S-video output if there is one.

If not then:

The last thing I can think of is to uncheck the 'extend windows ...'. Now
click on the image of the monitor 1 and then click the 'advanced' button and
select the 'displays' (or something similar). It should now be possible to
switch on the monitor 2 output, but this time they will show the same image
(though the external monitor may be in a smaller window, or it may show part
of the desktop*.

*As this is a laptop, you should also be able to do this with a function key
combination.

Open media player. Although it will appear on both monitors, only one will
have the overlay. Now double click on the overlay itself. The video image
should expand and fill *both* screens (because it is no longer an overlay).
Now double click again. The image should collapse onto the media player
itself.

One final thought (and here I'm really clutching at straws - and hatching
these ideas as I go along): expand the desktop onto the secondary monitor
again. Click on monitor 2 and check the box "Use this device as the primary
monitor" and click 'Apply'. The two monitor images should switch places
(and with a bit of luck and a favourable wind), the overlay should switch as
well. Now click on monitor 1 and uncheck the "Expand my windows desktop
...." and click apply. You should now have the desktop on the external
monitor. Now shut down windows and disconnect the external monitor (I mean
actually disconnect - don't just switch it off). Reboot, and the desktop
should come back up on the laptop display. Hopefully, the overlay should be
there as well.

If the overlay has gone again then something is very definitely forcing the
output onto the secondary output as noted above.

Hi,

I've done everything you suggested not only with WMP but also with
RealPlayer. Realplayer always works, that is, there is ALWAYS video image
within the RealPlayer video frame/area - sometimes there is video in overlay
also on the other monitor depending on the graphical card settings.

With WMP it does not work, whatever suggestion I follow, the video simply
refuses to appear in the video frame of WMP. It looks like the video in the
WMP video frame is being stopped from showing, or the video is being pushed
away, or the video in the WMP video frame is covered with a black sheet.

I've also tested out combinations of *Overlay Settings* found in the video
card and found in the WMP/Tools/Performance/Advanced button/Video
Acceleration Settings/Video Accelerationn pane/ but also that did not help.

This is clearly a bug in the WMP somehow.

Any other suggestions?

Yes, sp2 is cumulative and includes all the updates in sp1. Just do sp2
and you will be fine.

I'm sorry to say, that I am clean out of ideas.

The only (rather drastic) step that I can suggest at this point is to
rebuild windows and see if that solves it (perhaps on another disk drive in
case it makes no difference).
