This may seem like a stoopid question but is it possible to save a movie in a format other than Movie Maker, e.g. MPEG?

You can save as WMV or DV-AVI. your third party burning software can convert
to VOB files for DVD or TMPGEnc will encode to MPG1 or MPG2 for VCD or SVCD.
